The Republic Fire Department was first organized on May 17, 1941 . In 64 years of service to the Republic community, the Fire Department has seen many changes. Over the years, the staffing has changed from volunteers only to a combination (fulltime / paid on call) department. Fire apparatus has gone from one 1922 model fire truck to three engines, one 75-foot quint, three tankers, brush truck, heavy rescue, resource trailer, and two administrative vehicles. The Republic Fire Department has a ISO rating of Class 4.

 

The Republic Fire Department has ten full-time personnel including Fire Chief; Deputy Chief; Battalion Chief; one Captain; three Lieutenants; two line firefighters eleven Reserve Firefighters that hold various ranks; and Oreo, the fire department’s mascot.

 

The department responded to 970 calls in 2004. The department has two regular training meetings a month. In addition to that, the fire department also has specialized training classes throughout the year.

 

The Republic Fire Department has several different divisions within the department including: Fire Inspection, Fire Hydrant Flow Testing/Maintenance, Fire/Medical Training, Vehicle Maintenance, Cadet Firefighter Program, and Public Education/Relations.

During Fire Prevention week and other public education activities throughout the year, the Republic Fire Department educated over 4,000 children of the Republic area. The children went through the Fire Safety House learning about smoke detectors, and how to crawl low under smoke to escape a fire. Approximately 1,000 visitors toured the annual Fire Department’s spook house on Halloween.

In 2003, the Republic Fire Department received the Fire Act Grant in the amount of $110,967.00 for firefighting clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus. In 2004, the Fire Department received the State of Missouri, Homeland Security Grant in the amount of $44,160.00 for a resource trailer with various hazardous materials items and a thermal imagining camera. In 2005, the Fire Department once again received the Fire Act Grant in the amount of $63,867.00. This grant purchased 5-inch supply hose for all apparatus, and various other firefighting equipment. The department also received a $ 75,000.00 grant form the USDA which will help pay for architectural fees for the construction of a new fire station in the former Village of Brookline .
