REPUBLIC, MO – The Republic Police Department will be assisting the Republic C-2000 team, an underage drinking and substance abuse prevention coalition of Community Partnership of the Ozarks, in a Prescription Medication "Take Back" Program on Saturday, August 6, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the parking lot of the Republic Walgreens, located on Highway 60 between Hines Street and Independence Street. This event is funded by the Missouri Division of Alcohol & Drug Abuse. This is an opportunity for individuals to safely dispose of medications that are no longer being used, in order to protect our youth from prescription drug abuse and to protect our ground water supplies. Please bring any expired or unused prescription medications to this location. You do not have to be a resident of Greene County to turn in medications. One in five teens report that they have abused prescription drugs in the past; as a result, abuse of prescription medications is an escalating problem among our youth. According to the partnership for a Drug-Free America, 12 to 17 year olds abuse prescription drugs more than they abuse ecstasy, crack/cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine combined, and there are as many new abusers age 12 to 17 of prescription drugs as there are of marijuana. When prescriptions and medications are no longer needed, there are few options for safe disposal and the medications are forgotten. A survey showed that 63% of teens in the 2009 Partnership Attitude Tracking Survey said that prescription drugs are easy to get from their home medicine cabinets, and 56% of high school teens believe that prescription drugs are easier to get than illegal drugs.
