Types of Work Not Requiring a Permit

Any work to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or convert any commercial building will require a building permit. However, the following types of work may not require a building permit.

Building


  • Repair of roof (re-roofing)
  • Non-fixed and movable fixtures, cases, racks, counters and partitions not over 5 feet 9 inches in height
  • Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work
  • Prefabricated swimming pools less than 24 inches deep
  • Retaining walls less than four feet in height
  • Temporary motion picture, television and theater stage sets and scenery
  • Water tanks less than 5,000 gallons supported directly on grade

Electrical


  • Minor repair work
  • Radio and television transmitting stations except for equipment and wiring for power supply and installations of towers and antennas

Gas


  • Portable heating appliances
  • Repair or replacement of any minor part

Mechanical


  • Portable cooling units
  • Portable heating appliances
  • Portable ventilation equipment
  • Repair or replacement of any minor part
  • Self contained refrigeration equipment containing 10 pounds or less of refrigerant
