Swimming Pools

All swimming pools over 24 inches deep require a building permit. An accurate site plan must be submitted with the application for a building permit. When submitting your application, please reference the City's Swimming Pool Guidelines (PDF). Swimming pools may be constructed/erected in rear yards only. Any wall of a swimming pool shall not be located less than three feet from any rear or side property line, or less than five feet from any building.


Definitions


Private Swimming Pool


Any structure that contains water over 24 inches in depth and which is used, or intended to be used, for swimming or recreational bathing in connection with an occupancy in Use Group R-3 and which is available only to the family and guests of the householder. This includes inground, above-ground, onground swimming and storable pools and spas.


Storable Swimming or Wading Pool


Those that are constructed on or above the ground and are capable of holding water with a maximum depth of 48 inches made of molded polymeric walls or inflatable fabric walls, regardless of dimension.

Compliance with Codes


In-ground, on-ground and above-ground swimming pools must comply with Chapter 42 of the 2018 International Residential Code and with the following ISPSC (International Swimming Pool and Spa Code) standards (more information on adopted building codes here):
