Dr. Seuss Short Films and The Fishin' Magicians at The Amp on Saturday

Join us at The Amp on Saturday, September 24 for The Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who. Pre-movie activities include story time with the Republic Branch Library at 5:30 p.m. and a live show by The Fishin' Magicians at 6:00 p.m. The short films will begin at 7:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. respectively.

The Amp, located within J.R. Martin Park (300 E. Hines in Republic), features permanent seating for 500+, lawn and mulch viewing areas, a 20’ x 65’ performance stage, a 15’ tall on-stage truss system, a 16’ x 10’ movie screen, and much more.

Girls Basketball & Youth Volleyball Registration

The Republic Parks & Recreation Department is currently taking individual and team registrations for K-6th Grade Girls Basketball through Friday, September 23.  The eight-game season begins the week of October 17.  The league fee is $275.00 per team with a $25.00 discount for resident teams. Game days are as follows:

K, 1st & 2nd Grade: Saturdays
3rd Grade: Fridays
4th Grade: Thursdays
5th Grade: Mondays or Tuesdays
6th Grade: Mondays or Tuesdays

Registration for the 2016 Fall Youth Volleyball league is open and will run through September 30. The league is open to all area individuals and teams in grades three through eight.  The six-game league will begin the week of October 24. The league fee is $225 per team with a $25 discount for resident teams.  Tentative game days are as follows: 

3rd Grade: Monday/Tuesday
4th Grade: Monday/Tuesday
5th Grade: Tuesday/Thursday
6th Grade: Tuesday/Thursday
7th Grade: Tuesday/Thursday
8th Grade: Tuesday/Thursday
*Grades may be combined depending on the number of teams registered.

All games for both leagues will be played at the Republic Community Center located at 711 E. Miller Road.  All of our youth sports programs rely heavily on volunteer coaches to make them successful.

Toddler Tumbling

Upcoming Toddler Programming

The Republic Parks & Recreation Department is offering new sessions of Tot Academy and Toddler Tumbling!

A new session of Tot Academy will begin on Friday, September 30! Each four-week session of Tot Academy is themed and will include lessons, story time, activities, crafts and a snack. The theme for the next session is “Fall Into Autumn”! Classes are held on Friday mornings for toddlers ages 2-5. Two class times are available; 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 10:45-11:45 a.m. (maximum of six toddlers per class); the cost is $20.00 per toddler. One parent/guardian is required to stay in the classroom with their child. This session will run through Friday, October 21. Pre-registration with payment is required.  

Toddler Tumbling will begin on Wednesday, October 5! Classes are held on Wednesday evenings and are open to toddlers ages 2-5. This session of Toddler Tumbling runs through November 9. The cost is $30.00 per toddler for the six-week session. Two class times are available; 5:30-6:15 p.m. or 6:30-7:15 p.m. Basic tumbling, movement, balance, and flexibility will be covered in each session. Music and props will be incorporated into the classes. One parent will be required to participate in the class with their toddler. Pre-registration and payment is required for all sessions of this program. There is a maximum of six toddlers per class.  

Adult Basketball Registration Now Open

The Republic Parks & Recreation Department is currently accepting team registrations for the Fall Men’s Basketball League through Friday, October 7. The league is set to begin on October 19; all games will be played on Wednesday evenings in the Republic Activities Building. The league will consist of seven games with the top four teams making the tournament. The fee is $250.00 per team with a maximum of nine teams. Payment is due at the time of registration. To register, pick up a team registration packet at the Republic Community Center located at 711 E. Miller Road. 

Okinawan Karate

Registration for Okinawan Karate Opens Monday

Republic Parks & Recreation is excited to offer another session of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Republic Community Center. The next session of this program will begin on Tuesday, October 18 and run through Thursday, December 15. There will be NO CLASSES the week of Thanksgiving. 

The fee for the class is $130.00 per participant (fee includes a uniform and 16 classes). If you already have a karate uniform, the class fee is $80.00 (uniform MUST be white). The recommended starting age for the class is 6 years old. All participants will be required to sign a waiver at registration. There will be a maximum of 11 participants in this class, so register early! Pre-registration is required for each session, and payment is due at the time of registration.

Classes will be taught by Anthony Willis. Anthony relocated to the area after a 27-year career in the United States Air Force. He has been practicing and researching martial arts for 30+ years and has several black belts, including a 6th degree black belt in Okinawan Goju Ryu. He lived in Okinawa and studied under an Okinawan instructor for just under five years, and has been teaching Goju Ryu Karate for over 20 years. You won’t want to miss out on this class!  

BOOgie Bash

Save the Date for BOOgie Bash on October 28

The Republic Parks & Recreation Department will host the 8th Annual ‘BOOgie Bash’ on Friday, October 28, 2016. This is a free, family-friendly event held at The Amp. Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include several Halloween-themed games, hayrides, a bounce house, activities provided by local businesses, a costume contest, and more! The costume contest will be held at 6:30 p.m. with separate age divisions for children ages 0-12. Each age division will have costume categories, and the first place winner in each category will receive a prize! Concessions items will be available for purchase.
