December 2016
Mayor Harter

From The Mayor’s Corner

We now have a newly elected president and I am glad the election is over. I would like to thank  everyone who exercised their right to vote. At this writing, we don't have the voter turnout numbers; however, judging by the lines observed at the polls, we should show a high percentage of voter turnout.  Thanks to all the people who worked the polls. You did a great job!

We are now in the middle of the holiday season and I hope everyone takes time out to enjoy this time of year  with  friends  and family.  Our community has a lot to offer to help keep your holiday spirits up; from the area churches’ Christmas  programs, our Parks Department Reindeer Run December 2, Breakfast with  Santa December 3, Police and Fire Department Shop With a Hero December 6, and don't forget driving around our community and seeing all the light displays by our neighbors for your enjoyment in "R"-town!  Visit our Web site for more information on community events.

We also want everyone to be safe this holiday season; inspect all wiring on indoor and outdoor lighting, dispose of any damaged strands and don't overload circuits.  This is the time of year a lot of people will burn candles; be sure to keep candles away from all combustibles and never leave a candle burning unattended.  To prevent thefts, keep doors locked. And when shopping, lock car doors, place purchases in a locked trunk and never leave a car unattended with the keys inside!  Always be aware of your surroundings; park in an area well lit, and in case of inclement weather, have an emergency kit in your vehicle.

Now for the Mayor’s helpful tip for December: keep all receipts from holiday purchases, add together, divide by twelve, and then save this amount back  monthly in a Christmas club account at your bank or credit union. Next year,   you’ll have holiday cash instead of adding to credit cards or having to work that extra overtime for holiday purchases.

From the City Council and all employees at the City of Republic,

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,
and Seasons Greetings to all!

Republic Snow Routes

The City’s approach to plowing streets uses a    network of designated primary and secondary snow routes.  These routes are treated and plowed for every winter event impacting travel and allows crews to  efficiently focus resources during the heaviest      snowfall rates.  Primary snow routes are the busiest City roads and provide access to schools, commercial districts and other essential service areas. Secondary routes are comprised of collector streets that form a logical route through residential areas and employment centers. Secondary routes are selected so that most residences are located within just a few blocks yet provide plow drivers a uninterrupted path.

Residential streets will not receive the same level of service as designated snow routes and are typically plowed or treated only when snow accumulations reach six inches or more.  This strategy is based on the concept that all vehicles can travel short distances on snow-covered streets to reach a primary or secondary route.  Plowing side streets can be also detrimental for residents as the windrow of frozen material deposited across each driveway after plowing is often more of a barrier than if the road had not been plowed at all.  Residents are asked to contact the Public Works Department at (417) 732-3400, or 732-3456 outside of normal business hours, to report any dangerous road conditions. A map of designated snow routes can be found on the City’s website at

If you are a Republic resident and need a smoke alarm for your home, please contact the Republic Fire Department at (417) 732-3800.
